SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a match that lasted nearly two-and-a-half hours, the Barton women's volleyball team (7-9, 4-5) fell to Converse (8-15, 5-4) in five sets Saturday afternoon at Hannah Gymnasium in a Conference Carolinas match.
The Valkyries won by scores of 27-25, 16-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 19-17 and swept the season series from the Bulldogs. Converse also beat Barton in five sets in their earlier match in September.
Converse was led by Brittany Tepedino (Greenville, S.C.) and Alexis Pitts (Chesnee, S.C.) with 14 kills each as the Valkyries won their third straight match. Converse was also able to rally from a 9-2 deficit in the fifth set to beat the Bulldogs.
The Barton duo of freshman outside hitter Allison Gambill (Hickory, N.C.) and junior outside hitter Kaytlin Elkins (Hope Mills, N.C.) combined for 45 kills despite the loss. Gambill totaled 24 kills and 21 digs while Elkins added 21 kills in the losing effort. Elkins (239) and Gambill (222) rank second and third in the league in kills. Elkins also moved into fourth place on the school's all-time list for kills with 1,208.
Barton also received a 41-assist, 20-dig performance from sophomore setter Sarah Kirk (Pearland, Texas) as well but the Bulldogs suffered their third straight loss.
Barton remains on the road to take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas contest on Friday, October 25, at 7:00 p.m., while Converse faces Claflin in Orangeburg, S.C., on Tuesday beginning at 6:00 p.m.
