CENTRAL, S.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (2-0) won its second straight contest in dominant fashion with a 65-39 victory over UNC Pembroke (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Tysinger Gymnasium in the Peach Belt Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge. Southern Wesleyan was the host institution.
Barton – who beat Augusta by a 77-33 score on the first day of the challenge on Friday – placed four players in double figures including junior center and all-league honoree Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-2 advantage to start the game and never looked back. Barton sophomore guard Akira Wiggins (Knightdale, N.C.) added 13 points and senior guard Summer Baer (Fleming Island, N.C.) hit four treys and finished with 12 points as Barton held a 49-36 advantage on the boards and limited the Braves to 31 percent (16-of-52) shooting for the contest.
No one on the Braves' roster scored more than six points while Jillian Ebron (Greenville, N.C.) finished with six points, five rebounds and five assists in the losing effort.
Barton next hosts Francis Marion in its home opener on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m., while UNC Pembroke hosts Fayetteville State Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
