GREENWOOD, IND. – Barton College baseball player Calvin Hawke has garnered 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-District honors following his performance on and off the field this season as announced on Thursday.
On the diamond, Hawke, an infielder, has been a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, leading them to over 90 total wins and three appearances in the conference tournament. He ranks inside the program's Top 10 for career batting average (.355), hits (215), triples (7) and stolen bases (53), while also being among the all-time leaders in numerous single season categories.
This season the Wendell, N.C. resident ranks second on the team with a .391 batting average and 68 total hits, including nine doubles, five triples and eight home runs. Hawke has also driven in 38 RBI and scored 45 runs of his own while leading the team with 28 stolen bases.
Career academic and athletic awards for Hawke include: 2017 first team all-conference, 2017 Murphy Osborne Award winner, 2016 second team all-conference, 2016 conference scholar-athlete of the year, and an eight-time conference presidential honor roll and Barton dean's list member.
Off the field, Hawke has compiled a 3.97 GPA as a business administration and mathematics double major, and is a member of Barton's Sigma Beta Delta chapter (Business Honors Society) and Alpha Chi society (Academic Honors Society). He was also selected as Chief Marshal and was chosen to represent Conference Carolinas as one of two athletes able to attend the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum and participate in the NCAA's 360 Leadership Academy.
Hawke's off-campus activities include working with Wilson's Diversified Opportunities as a part of Barton's Day of Service and volunteering at the annual Halloween Fall festival at First Pentecostal Church.
The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the documents linked above are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America® honorees will be selected later this month.
